THE RESTYLANE FAMILY OF DERMAL FILLERS
If you are unhappy with the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and folds in your face that make you look, and perhaps even feel, older than you are, but you are not interested in or ready for invasive surgical procedures such as a face lift, a facial dermal filler may be the right choice for you. Often called “liquid face lifts”, dermal fillers offer a minimally-invasive method of filling out wrinkles and lines, improving the appearance of taut, tired-looking skin, and giving your face a fresh, youthful look. As we age, our skin begins to lose critical elements such as hyaluronic acid (HA), which is responsible for bringing the skin key nutrients and helping the skin retain moisture, making it look plump, smooth, and healthy. “Next generation” dermal fillers such as Restylane® and Perlane® replenish HA levels, allowing the skin to retain a healthy level of moisture and naturally eliminating wrinkles, folds, and fine lines.
Restylane® mimics your body’s natural hyaluronic acid in order to add facial volume, in particular fullness to your lips. Adding volume to the face reduces moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles. Restylane® is the best option for individuals with allergies because it contains biocompatible, non-animal-based HA. Perlane® is part of the Restylane® family of products, but has larger gel particles and utilizes a deeper injection, making it an excellent option for patients with deep-set wrinkles. Restylane® and Perlane® offer long-term results; patients can generally expect Restylane® and Perlane® treatments to last between six and eighteen months.
At Gentle Touch Aesthetics and Wellness in Los Gatos, California, our physicians offer a variety of safe, FDA-approved dermal fillers, such as Restylane® and Perlane®, to help their patients achieve vibrant and beautiful skin. HOW DO RESTYLANE AND PERLANE DIFFER?
Both Restylane® and Perlane® are biocompatible formulations of hyaluronic acid (HA), meaning that they have the same structure and function as the HA your body produces naturally. Just as your body eventually metabolizes its own HA, it will, over time, safely metabolize the fillers as well, meaning that periodic follow-up treatments will be required to maintain optimal results. Both serve to add support and fullness to facial tissues that have lost volume and elasticity as a result of the normal aging process. For patients who are concerned about possible discomfort during the injection process, both fillers have the option of being infused with small doses of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to eliminate any discomfort.
Restylane® and Perlane® differ in several key ways, however. First, they have been developed to target different areas of the face. Restylane® is designed to produce fullness in the face and lips and is perfect for individuals seeking a broad facial rejuvenation. Perlane® has not been approved for use in the lips, but can be used to correct nasolabial folds from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Second, they differ in terms of the average particle size and injection depth. Perlane® injections are deeper than Restylane®, so it is the perfect option for individuals with moderate to severe facial wrinkles that require greater correction. During your initial consultation, the medical team at Gentle Touch Aesthetics and Wellness will conduct a medical evaluation to determine which filler is most appropriate for you.
